Read moreThe nearshore rock piles north and south of Homosassa channel marker # 2 are great spots to fish for Spanish mackerel. Anglers should use some type of chum to get the bite started. Old shrimp or Cozy Kitten cat food will do the trick. Fresh shrimp on a long shank 2/0 nickel plated Eagle Claw hook with a 40lb fluorocarbon leader is the best method to catch the mackerel, but for a challenge try a bucktail jig or a jig with a soft plastic bati. Fly cast anglers should use na 8 weight fly rod with a white and chartreuse Clouser Minnow. If the 40lb leader keeps getting cut off try a steel leader you can tie like TyGer Wire. On a calm day you can sight cast the mackerel. Other possibilities to catch in the chum line are bluefish, black sea bass, cobia, and gag grouper. For good speckled trout action fish the outgoing tide in the kelp bottom near Chassahowitzka Point and to the north around Grey Mare Pass. The best bait has been a D.O.A. Deadly Combo with a 1/4 oz. shrimp in “Copper Crush” color. For redfish try the keys south of Mason Creek with live shrimp or MirrOlure Top Dogs inmullet color on the incoming high tide, reports Capt. William Toney of Homosassa Inshore Fishing Charters (352-621-9284). homosassainshorefishing.com View page
